Allium schubertii

Ka-bloom! This eccentric blossom form is not to be missed.

Giant 12" rosy pink to violet spheres—absolutely splendid. The individual florets dash out from the center on green stems that range in length to create an open airy look, like an exploding firework. Commonly called tumbleweed onion for its big dried seedheads that can tumble away in a stiff autumn wind. Introduced to the trade in the late 1800s, this allium bursts with character and texture; especially striking planted alongside Arctic Snow.

14–16" tall. Late Spring to Early Summer blooms, Z4–8. 12cm/up. NEW!

Items from our perennial plants warehouse will ship around September 30 through October.

Additional Information

Flowering Onions

The large Allium genus is characterized by small six-petaled florets held in umbels—large or small, loose or tight. Sweet-smelling blooms make great fresh cutflowers or dried winter arrangements; only if crushed will they smell like onion. Alliums are deer resistant and prefer full sun and well-drained soil, but can tolerate some shade. Fertilize in early spring to promote leaf and bulb growth. Leaves may die back before or during blooming. All types bloom in late spring to early summer, except where noted.

Flowers

All flowers are open-pollinated except where noted.

Days in parentheses after a variety indicate days to first bloom.
